So a lot of people didn’t like Gov. Bobby Jindal’s response last night
Jindal, Republican governor of Louisiana, gave the official GOP response to President Obama’s speech last night*, and it appears his speech went over…poorly.
Let’s just take a few examples…um…this one:
Awful.
And this one:
Bobby Jindal Or Kenneth From 30 Rock?
And this one:
Jindal’s response: Panned, seared
You can watch it yourself here.
I watched it, too, and was also underwhelmed, which brings up a real conundrum for me: the how-to of writing and delivering a good, rousing, enjoyable and quotable speech isn’t exactly hidden in a single hand-lettered tome kept on a mountain peak and guarded by giant winged homicidal rats. We know how to do it. Lots of people do.
So what the hell? Could there actually be a method to the madness? Or is it a case of several competing egos/agendas getting in the way of delivering a good, clear message? The “death by committee” syndrome?
I’m hoping the “method” explanation. I don’t quite believe it, but I’m hoping.
UPDATE – Gateway Pundit links to Rush Limbaugh’s defense of Jindal (emphasis added):
LIMBAUGH: [T]he people on our side are really making a mistake if they go after Bobby Jindal on the basis of style. Because if you think — people on our side I’m talking to you — those of you who think Jindal was horrible, you think — in fact, I don’t ever want to hear from you ever again. … I’ve spoken to him numerous times, he’s brilliant. He’s the real deal.
Okay, so…was there some “method to the madness?” And if not why so bad?
By the way, I dispute neither that Jindal is brilliant nor that he’s “the real deal.” I have no personal experience to back those statments up, but neither have I experience to dispute them.
* The obligatory brief explanation for those who aren’t familiar with the story, even though anybody reading this is very, very likely to be familiar with the story.
