If polled, could “most Americans” correctly spell Sotomayor?

June 28, 2009

I only ask, because I was misspelling it myself the first few times I posted about her (corrected now, of course).

The story: Most Americans Want Sotomayor on Court

Poll Indicates That 62 Percent Think Federal Judge Should Be Confirmed by Senate

A sizable majority of Americans want the Senate to confirm Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, and most call her “about right” ideologically, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Uh huh. Was that “sizeable majority of Americans” aware that she thinks the Second Amendment does not confer the right to own a firearm?

The telephone poll was conducted June 18 to 21, among a random national sample of 1,001 adults.

“A random national sample.” And was this “random national sample” vetted for knowledge of Sotomayor, the Court, the issues at hand?

Get this:

…most Americans do not think her life experiences influence the way she decides cases: Fifty-nine percent said the fact that she is a women does not factor in, and 52 percent said the same about her racial and ethnic background.

Did the pollsters actually find 1,001 random Americans with in-depth knowledge of Sotomayor’s decisions? Her opinions? Comparing them to those of other judges? If not, how could they possibly answer that question?

Polls suck.

What? Did your pastor preach that improper spelling was a sin today? Are you confessing your sins and trying to do penance or something?

A sizable majority of Americans want the Senate to confirm Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor,

Is that before or after they explained to those Americans who she was? Seriously, walk up to a normal person (i.e., not poligeeks like us) and ask them what they think of Sonia Sotomayor without adding “Obama’s nominee to SCOTUS” and you’re going to get a blank stare or a question about what show she’s on. Bonus points for telling ‘em she’s got a new R&B/Salsa crossover single.
