Faster, damn you! Die faster!

October 13, 2009

Those of you who pay attention to politics will likely remember this recent quote:

“This is what the Republicans want you to do. If you get sick America, the Republican health care plan is this: Die quickly! That’s right, the Republicans want you to die quickly if you get sick.”

You might – or might not – remember this one:

“If you’re very old, we’re not going to give you all that technology and all those drugs for the last couple years of your life to keep you maybe going for another couple of months. It’s too expensive. So we’re going to let you die.”

You might also remember this:

President Obama suggested at a town hall event Wednesday night that one way to shave medical costs is to stop expensive and ultimately futile procedures performed on people who are about to die and don’t stand to gain from the extra care.

In a nationally televised event at the White House, Obama said families need better information so they don’t unthinkingly approve “additional tests or additional drugs that the evidence shows is not necessarily going to improve care.”

Whoops. Gave it away. The last quote (and LA Times description of what he said) was President Obama – a Democrat. The middle quote was Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor in the Clinton administration. The first was Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL), describing what he called the “Republican health care plan.”

One Democrat saying Republicans want sick people to die. Other Democrats saying old and sick people should die.

Here, watch more of Grayson:

I mostly like the “blank piece of paper” rhetoric. “The Republican health care plan: don’t get sick,” he said.

And, see, from his perspective, he’s right. From a liberal, Democrat, socialist, if-the-government-isn’t-doing-it-it-must-not-be-getting-done perspective, he’s right. The Republican (mostly, anyway) position is: the government’s got no business doing this! And since they don’t want the government to provide health care, they don’t want anyone to have health care.

That’s Grayson’s position. That’s the liberal Democrat position. Either government gives it to us, or we don’t get to have it.

Good God.

And you know there’s gotta be something on Memeorandum, so let’s see if we can horn in on that.
