Man, I love the Olympics.

February 14, 2010

I’m especially enjoying the short-track speed skating, even though I find that Apolo Ohno guy just incredibly irritating.

Am I alone, there? Hey, it’s not like I know him personally. He may be a great guy. I just can’t stand his public personality. And that ridiculous little patch of hair under his lip. What is that?

But his sport – God it’s exciting. It’s nerve-wracking. I’m on the edge of my seat the whole time.

It’s so fast, you’re afraid your guy will never get up to the front. Except you don’t want to be in front, because somebody’s going to pass you! And the whole field can fall down at any second – four years ago a guy from Australia won the gold medal for exactly that reason: he was the only one who didn’t fall down!

The relays are the best. Absolute chaos.

UPDATE - I’m watching this ski mogul thingie right now. It’s part speed, part score – they ski down a really bumpy hill and do tricks off a couple of ramps.

The last two skiers were Americans, and they both messed up. The last guy wrecked and took out a sign on the edge of the course. Makes me think: they should keep video of all the wrecks and crashes throughout the Olympics and score them all at the end. Hand out some compensatory medals or something.

UPDATE II - yeah, okay, I just realized that’s pretty insensitive to that Georgian luger who died. Sorry.
