Quote (and comment) of the week

February 26, 2010

My man Elliot:

Whenever someone younger than me acts like they’re tougher than I am, I remind myself that I grew up playing with lawn darts.

And in the comments, Grumps says:

Throwing or catching? All the really tough guys played defense.

UPDATE - The TrogloWife notes that, before society got so uptight about seat belts and bike helmets and airbags and antibacterial cream, there was no such thing as the X Games.

The TrogloWife is astute! I’ve not seen a homemade bike ramp in the cul-de-sac since my kids were around ten. And yes, as a mother of the 1990′s, my boys were wearing their bike helmets, knee pads and elbow pads… Thank goodness at the time they thought the gear was cool. If not, I’m sure I would have won some kind of bad mother award because I wouldn’t have forced them to wear it.

We also played “cowboys and indians” with BB guns which would now be considered both dangerous AND politically incorrect.

We rode in the back of the pickup for about half the time I was in a vehicle growing up. We never even thought about seatbelts.

My childhood was spent running around the neighborhood, getting into things that our parents most definitely would not approve of. There was no such thing as a helicopter parent back then.
