Phobia of the Month: Caligynephobia

March 4, 2010

Caligynephobia: the fear of beautiful women. No, really. Cacophobia is the exact opposite: the fear of ugly people.

Maxim snarks:

The fear of beautiful women may sound bizarre, but some queer folks do actually suffer from it. Whether they are actually allowed to be considered “men” after they are diagnosed, we aren’t quite sure, but they do apparently exist. We like to think our website scares the piss out of them.

Hey, all you caligynephobes! Boo!

That’s actually the first picture that came up when I googled “beautiful woman.”

I’m curious about the etymology of that word. “Caligynephobia.” “Gyne” I get. Like gynecology. Gynegologist. Got it. But why’s the “cali” part there?

Could it be…

Nah.

UPDATE - In the comments, Dad29 explains:

Greek. “Kallistos, Kallista”–beautiful (M and F)

“Kakos” is a bit more interesting. IIRC, that’s Greek for “poop.”

Huh. So “kaka” is a Greek word.
