A Frenchman preens in hypocritical sneerishness

March 30, 2010

French president Nicolas Sarkozy simply can’t believe that we backwards Americans are so damned backwards:

“Welcome to the club of states who don’t turn their back on the sick and the poor,” Sarkozy said, referring to the U.S. health care overhaul signed by President Barack Obama last week.

What a very ignorant thing to say.

From the European perspective, he said, “when we look at the American debate on reforming health care, it’s difficult to believe.”

“The very fact that there should have been such a violent debate simply on the fact that the poorest of Americans should not be left out in the streets without a cent to look after them … is something astonishing to us.”

Indeed. In France, see, they don’t leave people in the streets. They leave their most vulnerable completely alone for weeks at a time without air conditioning in the hottest part of the summer:

The new (five-figure death) estimate comes a day after the French Parliament released a harshly worded report blaming the deaths on a complex health system, widespread failure among agencies and health services to coordinate efforts, and chronically insufficient care for the elderly.

Shame on us for not living up to their standards.
