I, for one, welcome our new artifical overlords.
And if you people know what’s good for you, you people will do the same thing.
WASHINGTON – Scientists announced a bold step Thursday in the enduring quest to create artificial life. They’ve produced a living cell powered by manmade DNA. While such work can evoke images of Frankenstein-like scientific tinkering, it also is exciting hopes that it could eventually lead to new fuels, better ways to clean polluted water, faster vaccine production and more.
The story asks: “Is it really an artificial life form?” Answer: no. Not until it grows into a real living thing the way a fertilized egg will. Still. If it’s for real, it’s kind of exciting. Scary, maybe, a little. But exciting. So quitcher whining, all you “oh, no, you’re trying to play God” copulation Luddites, you. Don’t make me turn you in.
UPDATE - Jon Vaala writes:
It seems to me that there are two debates going on here. The first is whether or not it is even ethical to create artificial life in the first place and the other is much a broader question of how far science should be allowed to go.
That’s exactly the kind of attitude that’s going to get your ass dumped into a work camp, fleshy.
