McChrystal out, Petraus in, MoveOn.org gibbering incoherently in confusion

June 23, 2010

General McChrystal had to go, and now he’s gone. In his place, the anti-counterinsurgency expert who MoveOn.org called “General Betray Us,” and who our current Secretary of State came this close to calling a liar outright.

ABC News:

President Obama today relieved embattled Gen. Stanley McChrystal from his position as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan for his remarks belittling administration officials, replacing him with Gen. David Petraeus, currently head of United States Central Command.

Petraeus was a popular choice:

…As one U.S. marine told ABC News, “the softball is teed up for Petraeus to hit it out of the park.”

Some marines say the new position may be a bit of a comedown for Petraeus, 57, who is best known for turning around the Iraq war in 2007 and is widely credited with devising the U.S. counterinsurgency strategy.

Lots more at Memeorandum, of course. Sen. Joe Lieberman described him as “the man who literally wrote the book on counterinsurgency.” So, good.

I am curious about Lefty reaction to this. We all remember MoveOn.org’s infamous ad, and then-Senator, now-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton just about calling Petraeus a liar during Senate hearings.

Am I making too much of the Clinton thing? Maybe – I know she and Petraeus have had dealings since then.

Still. Here’s Obama, appointing the guy to what is arguably the highest-visibility military command in the world right now.

Obama to uber-libs: suck it! Just make sure you keep your blood sugar up, General.
