Instant replay for soccer? I have another suggestion…
So everybody’s talking about FIFA – the international soccer organization that runs the World Cup – and whether or not they should institute instant replay to help out the officials.
There have been…let’s see…two bad calls against the U.S. team; one shoulda-been goal for England that wasn’t; one shouldn’t-have-been goal for Argentina that was. Probably others, too: those are the ones that come to mind.
Now the FIFA president, who’s been staunchly against replay, is finally acting like a good European. He’s waffling:
Blatter acknowledged major officiating errors in round-of-16 losses by England and Mexico, said he apologized to team officials in both nations and promised to reopen the debate over introducing vreplay technology, including video review, once this World Cup was over.
But wait: have you noticed? There are only three referees doing every game, and two of them work the sidelines. Only one ref out on the field.
How about adding another referee? Maybe two? That might help.

good idea
The NHL went to a two referee system a while ago, and an NHL rink isn’t the size of a small county like a world soccer field.
On the other hand, you often get a referee at the other end of the rink making bad calls because he’s distant and has poor perspective.
You know what would make the game better? Put the referee in an autogyro. The referee would have perspective, the downdraft would make the game more interesting as it makes the ball more lively, and Americans would turn in to see if he crashed.
