“Immediate Althouse: ‘Obama is being thrust into the arms of the onrushing GOP!’”

So House Democrats aren’t going to bring up The Compromise That Barry Made. Ann Althouse wonders whether he’s being “thrust into the arms of the onrushing GOP.”

Well, let’s do a little bit of what bloggers like The Trog do best: speculate rampantly!

• Obama makes a compromise he knows his own side will hate;

• His own side rejects it totally;

• Obama therefore becomes the reasonable, bipartisan one;

• Republicans find it harder to point out what a blatant socialist he is;

• Obama then rises above the fray.

Hm. Well, maybe. But that also means Congressional Democrats get the blame for the tax increase on middle class families and investors.

On the other hand, maybe Obama prefers winning re-election in 2012 with Republican majorities in both houses over losing re-election but leaving some Democrats in power.

He’s got his legacy to worry about, after all.
