I don’t know if it was “an obvious con.” I think Obama really meant it at the time. And then he got elected, and he found out that he was one of the rubes, too.

UPDATE - one more thing: years ago, I debated against a county-wide anti-war referendum (my opening statement, and after-action report). At one point, I mentioned the humanitarian aspect of our actions in Iraq, and the overwhelmingly anti-war audience scoffed as one. I sure hope they’re still scoffing now.
