Civil War still divides Americans

Funny story: for a few years, I co-led a teenage youth group with a native Floridian – the kind of Floridian who occasionally waxed into a vaguely Southern accent, just for fun.

While Florida isn’t the first state that comes to mind when one thinks of the Confederate States of America, they did in fact secede from the Union on January 10, 1861 and took part in the war.

Anyway. For some reason, we were talking about the Civil War during one youth group meeting, except when we were talking about the War of Northern Aggression. Every time I said the words “Civil War,” I’d pause so my co-leader could throw in “the War of Northern Aggression.”

The kids were pretty amused.
