Did the actors starring in “Atlas Shrugged” know what they were signing up for when they signed up?

April 18, 2011

Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged.” The fiscal libertarian’s version of Marx’s “Communist Manifesto.” Now in movie form and playing in various locations around the country.

A question: did the actors know what they’d signed up for? And if so, what do they think about it?

About Ayn Rand’s philosophies? About the taxes vs. spending debate? Conservative vs. Liberal? Democrat vs. Republican? Creators vs. looters?

These being actors, one would assume a predominant liberal bent. But we don’t really know. And yet, these actors will be known for their roles in this decidedly pro-conservative, anti-government movie.

Will that make trouble for them in the future? As they try to wage careers in the overwhelmingly liberal world of entertainment?

Will they denounce the basic premise of Randism? Distance themselves from the book and its fans? You know, as soon as the paychecks have cleared?

Or do we have a small and relatively unknown stable of conservative actors, here?

Just asking. Here, have the trailer, which looks pretty good:

I don’t honestly hold out much hope for the movie, but Ed Morrissey liked it.

Umm, Rand was not a Conservative, and nothing about her philosophy is “pro conservative.” You’re free to criticize her ideas (they certainly are worthy of such critical thinking,) but at least *try* to get your facts straight.

Rand’s philosophy is a flavor of Classical Liberalism; it is not related to Conservatism in any way outside of what today’s Conservatives like to delude themselves into believing (and of course, isn’t that the way it’s been for decades? Conservatives ripping off Liberal ideas, yet refusing to acknowledge their source, so beholden are they to Burke’s nonsense?)
