What do we need jobs for?

April 19, 2011

Daniel J. Mitchell:

This Cartoon Is Very Funny, but also Does a Great Job of Teaching Economics

Here’s the thing: even when the gummint pays for everything, you can still do better for yourself and your family by doing for yourself. But that only applies if people know that “doing for yourself” will work. That it’s worth the hassle. That there really is a better life out there, away from the gummint dole.

But how many people still know that after one or two generations of Wise Father Government?

The funny part is: people who depend on the government know how undependable the government is. Bureaucrats are ever-changing and arbitrary. Rules change. Laws change. The threat of budget cuts looms constantly. And yet: people accustomed to government money, after a while, simply can’t see any other way.
