Flip-flops: Romney’s “Achilles’ heel?” Or are they more a danger to his arches?
Steve Benen calls it his “Achilles’ heel.” But is it? The vast majority of voters who will help decide the Republican nominee next year might not see it that way. Example: me.
I’m kind of an in-betweener: paying attention, but not paying really close attention. When I hear “Romney’s a flip-flopper,” my first question is: “oh, on what?”
See, I’m not even sure what the flip-flops are, or even if they’re just the sort of “let’s interpret this as a flip-flop” political spinstership that always goes on in adversarial politics.
Is the rest of Republican America?
If Romney’s got an “Achilles’ heel,” it’s RomneyCare. That, I’m familiar with.
Side note: yes, the apostrophe in “Achilles’ heel” is correct. I was surprised, too, but I looked it up. So. Good.

Mitt Romney has more positions than the Kama Sutra.
Romney was for abortion before he was against it.
He was for Romneycare, which was the model for Obamacare, until it wasn’t.
Tax hikes – for, against, for, against, for, against – he’s flipped so many times I don’t think even he remembers what his current position is.
He was against Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, then he was for it when the winds changed direction.
As governor of Massachusetts he was pro-gun-control. As a presidential candidate he’s Mr. Second Amendment.
He favored campaign finance reform and called for public financing of all electoral campaigns. Now he says McCain-Feingold is unconstitutional.
He endorsed John McCain’s amnesty plan for illegal aliens. Now he’s acting like the AZ and AL immigration laws don’t go far enough, not to mention his attack on Rick Perry who’s still to the right of where Romney used to be on this issue.
Wait a week, I’m sure he’ll change his mind on something yet again.
Well sure, I know that now.
