Shoot. Yesterday was Palindrome Day, and I missed it.

November 3, 2011

Yesterday’s date: 11/02/2011. An eight-digit palindrome, which I take it is pretty rare. Let’s see…I think we have to wait about ninety October twelfths – 10/12/2101 – to see another one.

UPDATE – I take it back: the next eight-digit palindrome date will be 02-02-2020, although that seems kinda contrived with the zero out in front.

Pretty cool. Maybe not as cool as a binary date, but still.

Also, my calculation only takes the U.S. manner of dates into account. Those Europeans, with the way they put the day first and then the month, they may find one sooner.

But Europe’s about to collapse under the weight of their own economic insipidness, so it doesn’t really matter. Sure am glad we never adopted the Metric system.

One more thing: this means you can expect my next palindrome post when my web traffic hits 1,221,221. Unless I miss that, too.

Any more slips like that and you will jeopardize your nerd card.

The nifty thing is that if you use the One True Date Format*, ISO 8601, it’s also a palindrome: 2011-11-02. The next palindromic date is still 2020-02-02, followed by 2021-12-02.

    * The big advantage to using this format is that alphabetical ordering matches date ordering which means that sorting becomes a lot easier when you use this with computer files.

Steve, my nerd card is in no danger. Hey, DL, did you ever start that blog?

Of course you could also think about 11 November of this year with a 2 digit date….

    11/11/11

Just don’t burst into flames when you torque your knob up to eleven.

Hey, 11-11-11 is coming up. What would you call that?

Yes, that’s also a palindrome, but it’s not an eight digit palindrome.

On the other hand, we’ll have 11:11:11 on 11/11/11, which is a twelve digit palindrome.
