Just in case #OWS becomes really embarrassing…

November 28, 2011

Senate Democrats want to make sure they can do something about it:

The Defense Authorization bill — a “must-pass” piece of legislation — is headed to the Senate floor with troubling provisions that would give the President — and all future presidents — the authority to indefinitely imprison people, without charge or trial, both abroad and inside the United States.

It’s almost like all that kvetching about Dubya “tearing up the Constitution” was just political posturing or something. Y’know?

This probably has something to do with the sometimes-gray area between criminal activity and actually making war on the U.S. At what point does Timothy McVeigh stop being a domestic terrorist and become an enemy combatant?

Maybe there has to be a point at which your U.S. citizenship can’t protect you from “enemy combatant” status, but the burden of proof ought to be really high.

Be that as it may, let’s not allow these minor distractions prevent us from enjoying the fact that Democrats – yes, Democrats – are looking to pass these PATRIOT Act-on-PCP-like provisions. I’m not quite clear: was this the Hope? Or was this the Change?

Hat tip Fred Dooley.
