Could someone explain why the Daily Caller felt compelled to ask a race car driver/swimsuit model about Obama’s contraception mandate?

February 23, 2012

Let’s leave aside the obvious idiocy of asking athletes, actors, artists, and other famous/talented/successful but entirely non-political types of people about political issues, as though their success at athletics, acting, art makes them de facto experts on those issues.

As if there’s no one else whose opinion might be more newsworthy, but less tabloid-trashy.

The story: for some incomprehensible reason, the Daily Caller’s Michelle Fields asked Danica Patrick “about the Obama administration’s dictate that religious employers provide health care plans that cover contraceptives.”

Danica’s answer was, shall we say, less than studious:

“I leave it up to the government to make good decisions for Americans.”

Indeed, that is a silly thing to say. A liberal sheep-like thing to say. It’s the sort of thing one doesn’t expect from a highly competitive, successful marketing force like Danica.

And indeed, Danica’s response was surely the result of hours upon hours of study, reflection, and consideration of the issue. Right? Because don’t all race car drivers/swimsuit models spend all their free time refining their opinions on the latest political controversies?

Well? Don’t they?

I hesitate to link this apparent foray into guerrilla-style “gotcha” “journalism,” but I want you to see it yourself. So, here. Oddly-edited video at the link.

Back to the story. Danica’s response has spurred literally oodles of derisive comments at the Daily Caller and at least one example of blatant anti-troglodyte guilt-by-association.

Does no one else find it odd that the Daily Caller – purportedly a serious conservative organization – is so very interested in Danica Patrick’s opinion on contraceptive mandates?

Well I do. A few questions for Ms. Fields:

  • What’s the context of the question? Why did you decide to ask it?
  • How many other race car drivers did you ask the same question? What were their answers?
  • How many other swimsuit models did you ask the same question? What were their answers?
  • Did you discuss any other subjects with Ms. Patrick? If so, what, and why have you chosen only to release this question/answer?
  • What happened during the obviously-edited-out middle of your video? Was anything said during that time? If so, what?

And, most importantly:

  • Are you really so very threatened by an attractive, successful woman that you find it necessary to intentionally embarrass that woman in front of your own peer group?

Hey, I didn’t throw the first liberal smear tactic today. The Daily Caller did.

For the record, I don’t know Michelle Fields. I don’t know what her resume says. She is, if her picture at the Daily Caller is accurate, attractive in her own right. She may well be just as attractive and successful as Danica Patrick.

She may also seem like a complete idiot if asked about the upcoming NASCAR season, or the difference between NASCAR and IRL, or the difficulties of walking across a sound stage while wearing high heels and a giant foam “GO.”

She may be entirely unfamiliar with those topics. If so, we could hardly blame Ms. Fields for fumbling a question on one of them. Yet Ms. Fields has (apparently) taken great pleasure in doing the same to Danica Patrick.

Did she really consider this to be a serious journalistic effort? Does the Daily Caller?

Perhaps I’m wrong. Perhaps that tiny clip of video was a part of a much larger conversation, during which Danica invited Ms. Fields to discuss politics and Catholicism. Perhaps this is, after all, entirely Danica’s fault.

If so, Fields has ample opportunity to set the record straight.

It’s also possible, of course, that Ms. Fields chose to embarrass Ms. Patrick solely because Ms. Patrick is a Wisconsin native, and a TrogloFavorite. Anti-troglodyte bias will out, Ms. Fields. And it’s just as ugly as Danica Patrick is hot.

And One More Thing - for the last time: a “bog” is a swamp. It’s above ground. Troglodytes live in caves. Under ground. Basements. Dark, shady areas that environmentalists don’t piss themselves over anytime somebody leans two sticks together in them.

If I gotta explain that one…more…time…

Dude, do you think that maybe if she is so easily distracted as to cause her to wreck, maybe she might want to think about taking up another line of work? Hey, she would make one hell of a hostess, or maybe a restaurant waitress. Then if she gets distracted the most damage she might do to others around her is maybe spill a cup of coffee on your lap.
