Just in time for an Obama-Romney showdown: the Obama family is worried about money!
Via Jim Geraghty, this excerpt from Jodi Kantor’s book, “The Obamas:”
Even the president made uncomfortable jokes about why his wife needed so many things. Behind the scenes, aides said, the Obamas were concerned about money: the president’s books could only sell so many copies, and it would be years until he could write more and the first lady could write her own. From vacation rental homes big enough to accommodate the Secret Service to all the personal entertaining they did at the White House, their lifestyle had grown fearsomely expensive.
That’s all Geraghty’s emphasis.
Granted, the book came out in January, well before anybody knew Romney would be the nominee. Also, we don’t know whether Geraghty is blogging this after having read the book himself, or whether somebody tipped him off.
Or, I suppose, whether Geraghty himself is just a Democrat plant placed specifically to get this “the Obamas are more like regular folk than Romney” meme out there. But if that’s the case, then I wholeheartedly embrace my new liberal overlords, and I suggest you do the same. If you know what’s good for you.
One more caveat: the Obamas have made seven-figure incomes in two of the last four years. I would be quite pleased to have them play up their financial worries.
Okay, one more. That passage clearly speaks to the Obama’s lifestyle, not their income.
Um. Now I can’t remember how I was going to spin this into “the Obamas are trying to portray themselves as regular folk in order to make a stark contrast with the Romneys.” Ah. Well. You’re an intelligent bunch of readers. I don’t have to just lead you around by the noses, do I?
Hat tip Twitchy.
