Those wacky Australian Olympic swimmers!

June 27, 2012

What the hell is going on down there in Australia? I thought those people were laid back.

Okay, maybe they are. This may all be the work of one or two uptight-ites. If so, the rest of you Aussies oughta step up and shut up (in the direct verbal sense), ‘cause these folks are making you look silly.

Today’s story:

Stephanie Rice, gold-medal swimmer, criticized for wearing racy swimsuit

Yeah, I hate that when the swimmers wear revealing suits.

Swimmer Stephanie Rice, who swims for a living while wearing a swimsuit in a swimming pool, is catching flak in her native Australia for tweeting a picture of herself in a swimsuit.

Here’s the picture:

Okay, so that’s not exactly Olympic-issue. Still. Oh, fine, here’s her twitter account. I know you were looking for it.

This latest “scandal” – of a young woman taking an attractive picture of herself and posting it…on the internet – follows close on the heels of another embarrassing incident, also involving the Aussie swim team:

The Australian swim duo who posed with guns at a California shooting range and posted the photo to Facebook will be forced to leave the Olympics after the swimming competition ends on the second Sunday of the Summer Games. Nick D’Arcy and Kenrick Monk are also banned from using social media for a month-long period beginning July 16 as part of the punishment stemming from the controversial photograph.

Yes, they’re being punished for posing in a picture with firearms. Here, look:

Oh my God! Are those things loaded? I can’t tell from down here under my desk!

Or…I mean…are those things loaded, mate?

The two young men need no introduction to stupidity. D’Arcy was involved in a brawl on the night the 2008 Australian Olympic team was announced and broke the jaw, nose, eye socket and cheekbone of a teammate. He was kicked off the team but avoided jail for the incident.

The lawyer of the man he punched was surprisingly surprised at D’Arcy’s current brush with infamy. “I can’t believe it,” Sam Macedone told The Age. “Despite all the criticism, he still does things that are stupid.”

Yeah, stupid. That’s just the word I was thinking of.

It’s funny that no one complained in 2007 when the entire Olymipic swim team held an official team bonding session a shooting range here in Canberra.

Yeah, these types of scandals would never happen here in America. Wearing a bikini… unthinkable. Posing with g-g-guns… Al Qaeda has just recruited a million more suicide bombers! (I have a preference for concealed carry.)
