So life has been on the planet for 20 hours, but us humans for only a minute and seventeen seconds?

The history of Earth, condensed to a clock:
- The planet has had life for 5/6 of its existence?
- If the oldest fossils were discovered at 5:36, how do we know life started at 4:00?
This is, by the way, from a blog called Flowing Data – a cursory scroll-through seems to indicate some left-leaningness, but also a lot of interestingly cool nerdy kind of science stuff. Egghead kind of stuff. Which I love.
On the other hand, when blogger Nathan Yau asks this question on the “history of Earth on a clock” post:
What happens when midnight comes around again?
That kinda sheds the cat hair of doubt all over your plush chair of competence, Nathan. Unless you were just making some 1980s-era nuclear war comment?
