Any insinuations about Dr. Melissa Clouthier’s character inferred from the proceeding post are entirely unintentional and, if found, the fault of the reader for inferring them.

You’ve been advised.

Names are confusing sometimes. Or: to speak Frenchifiedly, or not to speak Frenchifiedly.

Did you know that the “r” is pronounced in the name “Clothier?” As in: Dr. Melissa Clothier. Conservative blogger, podcaster, winner of a Sammie Award. You actually pronounce the “r” in her name, instead of closing it out with a pinkie-waving “ay” sound – “Clothi-ay” – which, for some reason, is how the name looked to me. I saw the name “Clothier” and thought buff-ay instead of buff-et.

Then I listened to one of her podcasts and realized…um…no. It’s Clothier-r-r-r. As in someone who clothes. It only looks like a French word.

Yeah, I know, I’m tying my own noose here. Hey, no offense intended. This isn’t any kind of slam on Dr. Melissa. No, really. Although seeing as how the French president is further to the Right these days than the American president, maybe this could actually be a compliment. Yeah, that’s it. It’s a good thing.

I wonder if she changed the pronunciation before all that “Freedom Fries” hoopla from a few years ago? Pronounced it more Frenchly before, but changed it after?

Somebody should probably ask her. Maybe. Somebody besides me.

Another thing I learned from her podcast: Carrie Prejean’s name is actually pronounced “pre-jhon,” with that soft humming “j” sound the French use, like in the name Jacque.

I’d been pronouncing that name “pre-jean,” with the good hard American style “j.” As in “previous to blue pants.” Pre-jean.

But, come on, she’s an American classic, right? The beauty queen – slash – Girl Next Door who earns 15 minutes of good old-fashioned American-values fame before losing it all in a sex scandal? Or, well…sort of a sex scandal?

That’s American. That’s a hot dog at a Little League game in August. So I pronounced it American.

But, no. Her name is pronounced French. Dr. Melissa’s name is pronounced American. I had them the other way around.

I wonder why I did that.

Our long national nightmare isn’t quite over yet.

Carrie PrejeanCarrie Prejean, book deal, revelations of a racy video tape made years ago…

Am I the only one wondering what Donald Trump thinks?

Trump also commented on Prejean’s confirmation that she made an erotic tape for an ex-boyfriend — a racy tape that Carrie calls the “biggest mistake of my life.”

…At the end of the day, Trump chalks up Carrie’s revelations to self-promotion.

“She’s trying to sell a book,” Trump explains.

Y’know, I was wondering the same thing.

If true, that’s some top-shelf PR work, that is. That’s taking lemons and plunking the leprechaun right in the noggin, first try, and him handing over the pot of gold just to keep you from throwing another one.

Most of us, being in her situation, would succumb to human nature and pretend the tape didn’t exist. Most of us, knowing something like that was out there, would just sit tight, crossing our fingers, hoping it never saw the light of day. Hoping nobody ever asked about it. We’d pretend. Ignore. Rationalize. Self-delude.

And then, once it came clear that we can’t pretend it’s a secret anymore…then what? Curl up in fetal position and cry, probably. Hide. Keep ignoring and self-deluding, maybe. Or give up and get self-destructive.

The last thing we expect someone to do is figure out that, okay, this sucks, but this is where I am. How do I get better from here?

If Trump is right, Carrie Prejean not only had the wherewithal to cope with such an embarrassing and potentially devastating blow to her career and her reputation: she stared that possibility right in the face in order to turn it to her advantage as much as possible.

That’s hard core. Carrie Prejean: not to be trifled with.

And one more thing: I’m giving R.S. McCain a pass for not linking my blogging on this story, even though I had it even before Monique Stuart (or at least in the same ballpark, time-wise), whom he did link. Because I didn’t link him, either, even after I became aware of his post on the same subject, which is bad Rule #4. And because I’m a nice guy.

However, take Stacy’s conclusion that “this is not going to be good for her,” and then put it in context. The tape wasn’t good. The tape’s existence isn’t good. That the tape – or, at least, its existence – becomes public isn’t good.

But, that all being a foregone conclusion – something most of us would never bring ourselves to admit before, and possibly after the fact – maybe it’s possible to make it good. Or at least better, somehow. That’s good.

Carrie Prejean ‘fesses up:

Former Miss California Carrie Prejean has confirmed the existence of a video tape, the sensitive nature of which caused her to walk away from her lawsuit against the Miss USA Pageant.

Prejean replied — insert teasing pause here — yes, there was a tape she had done as a teenager. She made it for a distant boyfriend whom she loved at the time. She said TMZ can call it a “sex tape” if it wants. But she was alone on the video, and no one else was in the room.

Carrie-Prejean-2I wrote about this a few days ago. At that time, I was skeptical of TMZ’s explanation of why they hadn’t released the tape they claimed to have:

One thing makes me a little bit skeptical:

The video the lawyer showed Carrie is extremely graphic and has never been released publicly. We know that, because TMZ obtained the video months ago but decided not to post it because it was so racy.

TMZ decided not to post it…because it was too racy? TMZ…don’t they make money on TMZ? Isn’t it a for-profit website?

As it turns out, the tape wasn’t necessarily too racy. It was of a teenage girl. I’m guessing an underage teenage girl.

Which brings up a few questions:

  • Who provided TMZ with the tape?
  • How many people at TMZ have viewed it, and where is it now?
  • Are there copies?

And, most importantly:

  • Isn’t it illegal to possess images of naked minors?

Our long national nightmare is finally over

Carrie Prejean and the Miss California USA organization have settled their dueling lawsuits.

The legal war between former Miss California USA Carrie Prejean and pageant organizers is over.

carrie-prejeanA joint statement released Tuesday says Prejean and the organizers of the pageant reached a confidential settlement on dueling lawsuits.

Prejean sued Miss California USA organizers in August for libel, slander and religious discrimination. She accused them of telling her to stop mentioning God even before her controversial remarks against gay marriage.

Funny, that’s not how CNN described the suits:

The pageant has dropped its lawsuit filed last month demanding Prejean repay $5,200 given her for breast implants, publicist Kenn Henman said.

Prejean, in exchange, withdrew her suit accusing the pageant of violating her privacy by confirming to reporters that her breasts were fake, he said.

I wonder why they chose to focus on that?

UPDATE - well crap, this may just ruin my faith in human nature.

Prejean Sex Tape Triggers Settlement

Carrie Prejean demanded more than a million dollars during her settlement negotiations with Miss California USA Pageant officials — that is, until the lawyer for the Pageant showed Carrie an XXX home video of her handiwork.

That would certainly do it. Something had to make her drop her side of the suit – I assumed she simply realized it wasn’t going to go anywhere.

They don’t have to post the whole video – just a screencap or two. Just a description. Imagine the traffic they could generate just by reporting that they have it. But they didn’t, because it was too racy, even though they didn’t have to show the racy parts?

Might be true. I just have trouble with it.

UPDATE II - Is her book still being released this month?

Four percent of the “100 most searched-for women on the web” got there because of me.

Not that I expect thanks or anything. I’m just selfless.

Via The Linkiest, Asylum.com listed out the 100 women for whom interet users search the most, and some of the TrogloFavorites made the cut.

Sorry about that, Danica. We’ll work on it.

Gina Carano didn’t make the top 100, leading me to believe that the internet is even more lacking in good taste than I thought.

So who was #1? Mandy Moore:

Huh. Never heard of her.

Beauty Queens and their Courts (part ii)

Fire up the lawyers, ’cause Carrie Prejean’s gonna sue!

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) — Carrie Prejean has filed a lawsuit against Miss California USA officials who stripped her of her title, accusing them of libel and religious discrimination for her views on same-sex marriage.

“We will make the case that her title was taken from her solely because of her support of traditional marriage,” her attorney, Charles LiMandri, said in a news release.

Miss California I’m sure it’s just happy coincidence that “stripped of her title” is, in fact, the colloquially appropriate turn of phrase to use in this story.

I have no idea what Prejean’s been up to the last few months. She lost – oh, sorry, was stripped of – her title in June. She’s probably been writing a book or something:

Prejean wrote a book, “Still Standing,” to be released in November. She said it will discuss her side of the Miss USA controversy.

Her publisher, Regnery Publishing, said the book also will tell how she has faced a bias against conservatives — particularly conservative women, it said — who stand up for their beliefs.

So the lawsuit might be nothing more than headline-bait. You know, keep her in the public eye until it’s released, the better to spur sales. Okay by me, I guess.

P.S. Yeah, I know, I’m a day late on this story. Donald Douglas had it yesterday. Bonus at Donald’s place: Perez Hilton is still a classless jerk.

The new Miss Universe

It had to happen sometime: my favorite Miss Universe ever – also the only one I can name – handed her crown over to the newest Miss Universe…um, sometime in the last couple days, I guess.

VENEZUELA/

That’s Dayana Mendoza, the outgoing Miss Universe, helping Stefania Fernandez, the incoming Miss Universe, with her sash. I’ve written about Mendoza a couple times before.

I understand that Fernandez’ win is kind of historic, because it means back-to-back Miss Universes from the same country. Venezuela. I guess that means Hugo Chavez hasn’t nationalized the Miss Venezuela program yet.

This is her:

Stefania2107 stefania-fernandez-bikini-photo

We at the Trog look forward to bringing you news of whatever scandal she becomes embroiled in. Um…say, Steph? You do plan to have a scandal, right? Oh, you absolutely must. They’re all the rage. All the beauty queens are having them these days.

We can hope. One tidbit from the contest, in which she didn’t quite reach Carrie Prejean levels of shock:

During a question-and-answer segment with the five top finalists, Fernandez said she believed women have overcome obstacles such as hitting the proverbial glass ceiling.

“I feel we have reached the level that men are at,” she said.

Hey, good for you, Steph. Don’t let those feminists hold you down!

Still, we breathlessly await the actual upcoming scandal. You will have to do better than that.

One more thing: Miss USA Kristen Dalton made the contest’s top 10, but was unable to crack the top 5.

kristen_dalton1 kristen_dalton2

I’d like to see the judges’ scoring sheets, please.

Just when you start to think you might never have an excuse to post about Carrie Prejean again…

Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza poses topless for Maxim.

Usually when a beauty queen has topless pictures released, it’s a huge scandal. Not this time around, though.

Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza is appearing topless in the September issue of Maxim magazine, on stands August 18, with the full support of her pageant (they gave Maxim the photos!), and FOXNews.com has exclusive shots from the pageant-sponsored shoot right here.

dayana_mendoza6543

Sorry, no topless photos here. You’ll have to click the link. Safe for work, I suppose, unless you work in a convent. There’s no actual nudity.

Former Miss California Carrie Prejean was, readers will remember, harshly criticized for having posed topless in her pre-Miss California days. Now she and Dayana have something to talk about!

And that’s not all they have in common: longtime readers will remember Miss Mendoza’s blog post about her visit to Guantanamo Bay…and how wonderful she thought it was there.

Politically incorrect. No?

Miss Prejean, of course, became a political and social lightning rod following her statment in support of traditional marriage at the Miss Universe pageant.

Oh, fine, have a picture of Prejean. But no topless ones.

Hey, Mike, has she got a name?

Fishersville Mike, inspired by the way I always posted pics of Miss Wisconsin USA Alexandra Wehrley during the whole Carrie Prejean thing, shows a little state pride by posting a picture of the newly selected Miss Virginia.

He posts her picture, but doesn’t tell us…her name. Guess we know where your priorities are, Mike.

Naturally enough, I took the opportunity to look up the newest Miss Wisconsin, Kristina Smaby:

kristina_smaby

I admit I’m a little confused by all the different pageants. Alexandra Wehrley is Miss Wisconsin USA, but Kristina Smaby is Miss Wisconsin. She’ll compete for Miss America, not Miss USA, and then there’s the whole Miss World vs. Miss Universe thing. And the teen competitions, and the Mrs. competitions…

More research is required, I think.

Pajamas TV was particularly funny today.

Andrew Klavan reports on his idea for a new superhero, and Steven Crowder sides with Perez Hilton. Special appearance by Bill Whittle in that one. I think that was Bill Whittle, anyway.

Note that those are two separate videos.

Y’know, if it wasn’t for Carrie Prejean, I’d have no idea who Perez Hilton is.

Beauty Queens and their Courts

Phew, it’s been three whole days since I posted on the whole Miss California thing. I was starting to get the shakes.

But no more. Thanks to Donald Douglas, I know now that former Miss California Carrie Prejean might just sue:

Prejean has threatened to sue pageant officials for defamation, and now TMZ.com reports that the pageant is threatening to sue Prejean for “churlish insolent misbehavior.”

…A letter sent by the pageant’s lawyer claims that Prejean has turned down 39 pageant appearances in the last month, and that Prejean defamed director Keith Lewis by saying he pressured her to pose for Playboy (Lewis says he merely passed on the offer to Prejean). Prejean claims that she has “worked in good faith to meet my responsibilities as Miss California USA” and has met every scheduled appearance as recently as May 31.

carrie-prejean-cleavage1miss-california-prejean1

And guess what? There’s more! Remember the 2007 Miss Nevada, Katie Rees? Of course you do! She was dethroned shortly after pictures of her acting lewdly with other women hit the internet, and:

Katie Rees, who was dethroned as Miss Nevada in 2007 also for a series of pictures, is now speaking out on the issue, claiming double standards in the ruling, according to Extra TV.

katierees1katierees2

The dethroned beauty spoke to Extra and revealed that, in light of Trump’s recent decision to let Prejean keep her crown, she was considering her legal options against the pageant. The fact that both posed for pictures that violated clauses of her contracts and only she (Rees) got the boot clearly shows that double standards are in place, the former Miss Nevada says. Moreover, since Miss USA Tara Conner herself violated the rules by doing drugs and she wasn’t dethroned either, Reed knows for a fact she stands to win a case in court, should she decide to file an action against the pageant.

I think this will likely lead to another Who’s Who post at some point in the future. Stay tuned.

In other news, Alexandra Wehrley is still better looking than all of them, and without the ugly drama.

Just in case you’re having trouble keeping up with the Carrie Prejean/Tami Farrell Miss California thing…

…let’s meet the cast!

Carrie Prejean: the now-former Miss California, who missed out on being Miss USA by this much after telling an openly gay pageant judge that she believes in traditional marriage.

Carrie-Prejean Carrie-Prejean-2

She was stripped (no pun, I swear!) of her title this week: she says it’s because of the moral stand she took; Miss California officials say it’s because she wasn’t upholding her contract.

Tami Farrell: the new Miss California. Runner-up to Prejean, taking over the role now that Prejean is out. She may hold the same beliefs as Prejean.

tamifarrell3 TamiFarrell

One does wonder whether Miss California officials are holding their breath, hoping there aren’t any more shoes to drop.

Shanna Moakler: former Miss New York and Miss USA, also Playmate of the Month in December of 2001 and co-director of the Miss California USA pageant.

shana-moakler moakler_dec01b

She left that latter position over her disagreement with Prejean’s beliefs, but now would be willing to return.

Other characters: Miss USA CEO Donald Trump; Miss California USA executive director Keith Lewis; Charles LiMandri, Prejean’s lawyer. Pictures available, probably, but who cares?

And finally, Alexandra Wehrley: Miss Wisconsin USA, from Pewaukee. She’s not involved in any of the above drama. She’s just way better-looking than any of the other three, so I figured a few pictures were entirely called for.

There you have it, folks. You are now up to speed.

Tami Farrell, Carrie Prejean, and…the countdown to I Don’t Care has begun, but hasn’t reached zero yet.

Via Jammie Wearing Fool, new Miss California Tami Farrell shares her predecessor’s views on gay marriage:

Fox News host Neil Cavuto asked Farrell, who is Christian, on his show today:

tami_farrell1“[Prejean] went out and said that a marriage is between a man and a woman. Do you share that view?”

Farrell responded in the affirmative with a simple, “Uh huh.”

“You do, OK,” said Cavuto.

Farrell quickly added: “I don’t think that I have the right or anybody has a right to tell somebody who they can or can’t love. And I think that this is a civil rights issue. And I think that the right thing to do is let the voters decide.”

I want to be a little careful, here, since I haven’t been able to find that exchange anywhere else. Not that I looked real hard. Let’s just call this an excuse to post another picture.

Also: Carrie Prejean is hitting back against claims that she was difficult to work with, and wasn’t honoring her contract.

Prejean told Matt Lauer on NBC’S “Today” show Friday that she “absolutely” had been dethroned because of the comment, when she said marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Prejean lost her title Wednesday after the California pageant’s executive director said Prejean was skipping Miss California USA events while speaking out against gay marriage at unsanctioned appearances.

carrie-prejean-classic-photoPrejean denied that and calls her firing a set up. She says “tolerance needs to be a two-way street.”

Here’s what the other side is saying:

On The Early Show Thursday, Keith Lewis, the executive director of Miss California USA…told co-anchor Julie Chen Prejean missed “tens and tens” of appearances and was “difficult to work with.”

Lewis said Prejean told competition officials she couldn’t attend events because she had other things to do, and declined to appear in Hollywood.

…Lewis called Prejean’s relationship with pageant officials “combative.”

Well, whether she honored her contract or not ought to come out in a court case, if there is one. But, boy, she must have been really combative and difficult if an organization that exists to promote pampered celebrity models and beauty queens fired her for it.

June 12, 2009 Posted by Lance Burri | Bloviastics | , , | 2 Comments

And while we’re talking about Carrie Prejean…

Miss Malibu Tami Farrell, first runner-up in last year’s Miss California contest, has received her promotion following Carrie Prejean’s abrupt and public-before-private firing. Here she is, your…um, I mean their…Miss California:

SK7Z1986

Sooner or later I’m going to start wondering why I care about this.

Anyway. Fox News had a very brief and softball interview with her, here. One excerpt:

FOX: No hard feelings that you didn’t win the title outright last year?

Tami Farrell: Everything in life happens for a reason, and I think Carrie won for a purpose. I’m just excited to see what I can do in the next few months of my reign.

Note: I’m not saying they should have grilled her on Prejean and the whole gay marriage issue. Of course they shoudn’t have – she’s not a politician or anything. She’s just a beauty queen. And I say “just” in the most admiring (but non-stalkerish) way possible.

I’d just be interested to know what she thought of the whole thing; what she meant by “I think Carrie won for a purpose;” and whether or not the Miss California organization is prepping her for the inevitable moment when such questions do pop up.

In the meantime, still no word on whether former Playboy model Shanna Moakler will be welcomed back to the Miss California organization now that the Bible-thumper has been canned.

And one more thing: the firing may be contested.

And I still can’t remember who actually won the Miss USA pageant. All I know is, Prejean came in second.

Just for the record: If Luca Brasi had lived, he’d have been on Michael’s side.

That’s why the Barzinis and the Tattallgias – or whoever it was – had to send him nappy-bye with the fishes.

Those few of my readers who date back to my blogspot days know that I love few things more than kicking around a movie, and relating it to life, politics, Jesus, child-rearing. I found grim reality in Serenity; Christian allegories in Star Wars; a call to action in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen; life lessons in Blazing Saddles; proof of mankind’s innocent naïveté in E.T.

the-trogfatherAnd don’t even get me started on The Princess Bride. I could write a book.

Thus, it was with great satisfaction that I read about Corleone Conservatives at The Other McCain today. A metaphor, the movie was, for today’s political landscape, particularly for conservatives.

An excerpt:

Next time you see some “conservative” pundit telling Republicans to be moderate — to be reasonable, to compromise core conservative principles — think of yourself as Michael Corleone when Tessio approaches him at the Godfather’s funeral to set up the Barzini meeting. And think about the beautiful moment when Michael finally confronts that traitorous punk Carlo:

Barzini is dead. So is Phillip Tattallgia. Moe Green. Slacci. Cuneo. Today I settled all family business. So don’t tell me that you’re innocent. Admit what you did.

Good-bye, Carlo — and good-bye, Tessio, too.

Read the whole thing.

Slight side note: when there’s a new Carrie Prejean story out there – especially one with a Shanna Moakler angle – and Stacy McCain isn’t blogging it at least twice within a 24-hour period? That’s how you know he’s really, really busy.

Yeah, I’m done sucking up now. For the time being.

Miss California back to being Miss Prejean

carrie-prejean1Well, that bites:

Less than a month after being told by Donald Trump that she can keep her Miss California crown, Carrie Prejean was fired on Wednesday.

In a release first obtained by FOXNews.com, K2 Productions, the independent producers of the Miss California USA pageant, under license from Miss Universe, cited continued breach of contract issues as the reason for Prejean’s firing.

“This was a decision based solely on contract violations,” Keith Lewis, executive director of K2 Productions, said in the release. “After our press conference in New York we had hoped we would be able to forge a better working relationship. However, since that time it has become abundantly clear that Carrie has no desire to fulfill her obligations under our contract and work together.”

Shanna Moakler was unavailable for comment, I guess. [Note: see update below]

Somehow I think Prejean will be okay. I just hope all this doesn’t limit her career, although I’m not completely sure what kind of career former Miss Californias tend to have.

Say, what was the Miss USA winner’s name again?

Via Memeorandum

UPDATE - I’m adding this, mostly because I’m getting lots of hits from people searching for Shanna Moakler:

…on Wednesday, not long after the news broke, Moakler issued a statement to Access over Prejean’s firing.

“First and foremost, my faith has been restored in the Miss Universe Organization and with Donald Trump. I believed eventually what I intimately knew would come to fruition,” Moakler said.

Moakler once posed nude for Playboy magazine. There was no immediate word on whether the organization will take her back, now that the Bible-thumper has finally been shown the door.
