Most Americans back outreach to Muslims, fewer digits in newspaper stories about poll results
Keep in mind that the title of this Washington Post article is: “Most in poll back outreach to Muslims.”
Most Americans think President Obama’s pledge to “seek a new way forward” with the Muslim world is an important goal, even as nearly half hold negative views about Islam and a sizable number say that even mainstream adherents to the religion encourage violence against non-Muslims, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
Are you wondering what they mean by “most Americans?” Yeah, me too. Article doesn’t say.
…Majorities of Americans with sympathetic and unsympathetic views about Islam said it is important for the president to try to improve U.S. relations with Muslim nations, with those holding more positive views much more likely to call those moves “very important.”
What size majorities? Is there a difference between the two groups, and if so, how big?
Seems like relevant information to me, but, feh. What do I know? They’re the Washington Post, and they thought it was more important to point out that Republicans are xenophobic and prejudiced.
For the record, I am a Republican-American with no opinion about the Muslim religion as a whole, except that certain members of that religion are really screwing it up for the rest of them.
I think it’s very, very important to achieve better relations with Islam and Islamic nations. However, that’s gonna hafta include the following: stop kidnapping and then beheading people; stop convicting women of being raped; stop stoning and/or whipping girls who find themselves momentarily alone with an unrelated male; stop persecuting Christians within your borders (a.k.a. “seek a new way forward” with the Christian world); stop encouraging each other to strap on explosive vests and detonate themselves in crowded marketplaces full of children; stop trying to build nuclear weapons; and while it’s perfectly okay with me if you want to continue hating Israel and/or Jews in general (instead of “seeking a new way forward” with the Jewish world), you have to stop demanding that Israelis and Jews all die by fire or drown in the Mediterranean Sea.
I’m all for getting along with each other. But some things, you’ll have to do our way.
