If an independent goes along with the majority, is he still independent?

Independent independent independent!

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A majority of independent voters disapprove of how Barack Obama’s handling his job as president, according to a new national poll.

Thoughts:

  • Independent voters are independent, thus they like to do things for themselves. It doesn’t look like President Obama wants to let them do things for themselves, so they’re not liking him so much anymore.
  • Independent voters are independent, and the most common way to look like a political independent is to go against the grain. Obama was immensely popular, so independents started moving the other way in order to remain “independent.” As Obama’s numbers continue to sink, look for independents to start moving the other way again.
  • Independent voters are independent, but since I’ve used the word “independent” so many times now, the word has lost all meaning to me. There’s really no point to making three whole comments about a meaningless word.

Allahpundit agrees with me:

Smells like this is being driven more by anti-incumbency fever than anti-Democratic fever, but we’ll take it any way we can get it.

Independents confuse me – should I admire them for (allegedly) being open to both sides or revile them for their lack of core convictions?

    Choices, choices…

I think the growing number of Independents has more to do with the sad state of the two major political parties rather than any psychological need to be non-conformist (though there are those). I think if Obama had governed as Centrist then Independents would be much more pleased with the Democrats.
