Racist, lazy, stupid, or a combination of all three?
Wow, people can be stupid:
A school principal said she’s “appalled” by a homework assignment that used scenarios about killing and whipping slaves to teach math.
Fer cry-eye. People don’t know not to do that in this day and age? College-educated teachers, living and working in Liberaltopia, don’t know?
Sensitivity training for everybody!
A teacher had asked fourth-graders to write homework questions that blended math and social studies, education officials said. The teacher then used the students’ questions, including the slave-related ones, as homework for the class.
One question stated the number of slaves who died while taking over a ship. It asked how many slaves were still alive. The other said a slave was whipped five times a day and asked students to calculate how many times a month he was whipped.
A student-teacher said she was shocked by the wording and later refused to hand out the worksheet in another class.
In a bizarre twist, I’m giving this teacher the benefit of the doubt. Here’s what I think happened: the teacher told the kids to write the questions; one of the kids, being the kind of jerk that only kids can be, wrote the slave-oriented ones; the teacher simply cut-and-pasted all the questions onto the homework without even reading them.
Maybe there was a “Swamp People” marathon on, or something.
In this scenario, the teacher isn’t racist or even insensitive. Just lazy, plus maybe stupid. I think that’s probably the best case scenario for him. Or, more likely, her.
I wonder what race the student who wrote the questions is?
